Neighbors of Harvey Park I send you wishes for a wonderful holiday season. Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas to all!!!

My concern for the Harvey Park neighborhood is the need to support and strengthen the HPIA. Informing, involving, exchanging information and ideas is the goal at our meetings. The Board and Committees exist to support our community. The City and State Representatives at the meetings exist to hear our concerns and forward them up for consideration. Democracies require us to participate.

I’m asking that a neighborhood of over 4,000 homes give their financial support and a small amount of personal involvement to the HPIA. Come the first Wednesday of the month to be a part of the Harvey Park Improvement Association.

I wish all of you a blessed holiday season full of joy and time with family!

Greetings to all Harvey Park residents,

The weather will change soon so it’s time to finish up the last of the outdoor tasks before the snow and cold comes.

I’m still waiting for information on the neighborhood leaf drop program. Be ready with the large brown paper bags! Is there a neighbor nearby who might need help raking or transporting to the collection point? I’m sure we can find someone to help.

Our last meeting saw some lively discussions about dog parks and increases in trash collection rates. Guess you missed it, if you didn’t come to the meeting. That’s what I like, every one is different. I never know what to expect. The HPIA is a fine organization that exists to inform and assist everyone.

Mark your calendar and join us at 7pm Wednesday the 2nd of November.
Happy Halloween!!!!

Another great school year is underway at Kunsmiller Creative Arts Academy. Our third year promises to be even better than the first two. Students are making wonderful progress in the classrooms and enjoying the engaging environment of an arts-integrated curriculum.

KCAA’s first staff musical “The Best of Both Worlds” was a smashing success! Our school raised over $1700 which is going immediately back into the classrooms in the form of arts based supplies for our academic teachers at all grade levels! Thanks to all of our staff for their hard work, and for two great evenings of entertainment.

KCAA athletics are also in full bloom! Two big thumbs up for our artist-athletes. Our boys’ soccer team under the coaching expertise of our own Mr. Sanchez finished the season undefeated, in first place for the Denver Prep League. Our second thumbs up goes to our own 6th grader Blayze Jessen, who finished third in the Slaven’s Cross-Country Invitational. The event featured over 800 athletes from 40 different schools!

Our next First Friday event will be Friday, November 4 from 5-7 p.m. Each month the Arts Team puts together a fun-filled evening highlighting the work of our students. Live performances and displays of art work are always part of then festivities. This month will feature a teaser for the Willy Wonka Kids musical. Students in grades 2 through 9 have been nhard at work on this version of Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. Full performances will be November 8th and 9th at 6:00 pm in the KCAA theater. Tickets will be available at the door.

KCAA invites all of the community to join us in celebrating the arts in education!

Denver residents have been hearing a lot about trash collection fees lately and many are wondering why. In District 2, homeowners seem to like the current system. Trash gets picked up and the cost is already part of their taxes. That may be why 76 percent of you said in my 2011 citizen survey that you oppose any trash fee. Ideas still being bandied about include a flat fee, one based on how much trash you produce; a socialized fee to help low-income people; and a contract with a private hauler.

So why all the trash talk now? The answer lies in the gap between the money the city takes into its General Fund and the amount it spends. This gap is growing and a task force charged with recommending fixes seems to believe that making citizens pay fees for trash collection will help lessen it.

The idea’s been around for a while; it’s not part of 2012 budget talks. But it’s a discussion that gets more intricate the more it’s discussed.

My position is well known: I oppose trash fees. There are other ways to lessen our “structural financial gap” that we haven’t yet tried. Rather than remake the trash collection system we ought to stop picking the pocket of the General Fund for programs that don’t have to do with basic city services.

For example: Some $2 million of Xcel franchise fees are diverted from the General Fund for private grants; another $3.1 million of the fund goes to the Crime Prevention and Control Commission for programs its members like; and $18 million is eaten up for debt payments on projects voters never got to approve. One councilwoman even asked for General Fund money for child care, which has a completely separate funding source.

It’s got to stop. Diverting dollars then crying “poor” is wrong.
